African Ministries
by David Harriman
At the invitation of the Wesleyan Church, I had the
privilege of representing The Francis Asbury Society in Equatorial
Guinea, Africa, where I ministered in the cities of Malabo (capital) and
Bata (coastal city). It was a rich and rewarding time as I preached and
taught.
A NEW DAY
Equatorial Guinea is the smallest country in continental
Africa in terms of population. Guinea (population 486,900) is located on
the west coast of Africa and once a Spanish colony, is the only black
African country where the official language is Spanish. At one time its
people were under the rule of a terrible dictatorship which affected the
country's economical and religious fiber. Churches were forced to close
their doors and many Christians were killed.
Today, however, is a new day for Guinea as the economy
begins to improve and a spiritual awakening is evident. Although the
majority of the population is entrenched in witchcraft, spiritism, and
polygamy, many are coming to Christ and churches are being born. It is
estimated that 20% of the population is now evangelical Christian. The
Wesleyan Church, for example, now has 17 churches and over 1,000 in
attendance.
RESPONSIVE SEEKERS
There were a total of 19 conversions during the eleven
day stay, two of which I personally led to Christ. One of these was an
aids victim. According to one reliable source, possibly 10%, if not
more, of the population carries the aids virus. It was a sad sight to
behold as I visited the aids victims in the State Hospital.
REWARDING MARRIAGE AND FAMILY SEMINAR
A marriage and family seminar for Christian couples and
singles was held in the city of Bata. It was a rewarding time as hearts
and minds eagerly received for the first time practical Biblical helps -
a striking contrast to traditional tribal customs. Many responded and
renewed their marriage vows.
In a country where immorality is on the rampage, I had
the unique privilege of conducting two youth rallies on sexual purity in
the cities of Bata and Malabo. What a beautiful sight to not only see
Christian young people making commitments toward abstinence, but also
totally surrendering their lives to Christ.
HUNGER FOR HOLY LIVING
Church leaders and Christians gathered together to
eagerly receive teaching on holiness and its practical application to
everyday life. The Holy Spirit was present as believers sought wholeness
and purity for their lives.
OPEN INVITATION
An open invitation has been extended by the Wesleyan
Church to return to Guinea in the near future to hold meetings, but on a
larger scale. There is no end as to what could be done whether through
conferences or evangelistic meetings.
Respectfully submitted,
