The Francis Asbury Society gratefully announces the publication of our second book of the summer. It is Dr. Matt Friedeman’s Discipleship in the Home, now available in the FAS Bookstore.

Dr. Friedeman’s thesis is that fulfillment of the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations begins in the home. The same principles that apply to winning a lost world apply to raising the kind of godly children who will indeed grow up to be world-changers for Christ.

This book was born in Dr. Friedeman’s own home, as the father of five, and in the classroom, as professor of Christian Education at Wesley Biblical Seminary. It is a wonderful blend of practical wisdom built on a firm Biblical foundation. The last quarter of the book is a powerful family catechism for the dining room table, containing essential questions and answers, and scripture memory plans. He also gives creative plans for meaningful father-son and mother-daughter retreats and rites of passage celebrations.

Dr. Friedeman’s approach is bold and unapologetic. He dares to challenge many aspects of contemporary culture that have infiltrated even sincere Christian homes. But this is no exercise in hand-wringing despair or “ain’t it awful.” For every problem he confronts he offers multiple positive alternatives and solutions.

Matt and Mary Friedeman have tested their insights from the beginning with their five children. The book is full of real-life illustrations from their own experience.

The American Family Association is very excited about this book and plans to produce a video companion to it in the near future.

If you are a parent or a grandparent or work with children in any capacity this book is for you. My only regret is that I did not read it sooner. It is full of the kind of things most of us have known in theory, but never quite understood how to apply. Dr. Friedeman connects the dots between knowing and doing. We believe this book will have a transforming impact on the American family.
