Rev. Paul Blair
From Paul regarding his current doctoral studies: For some time I have wanted to pursue doctoral studies at the University of St. Andrew’s Institute of Theology, Imagination, and the Arts in Scotland. I have been interested in the theological contribution of Charles Williams, a colleague of C.S. Lewis and one of the famous Inklings. Charles Williams was an extraordinary thinker and writer. Comparatively, little study has been done on his work. He was particularly influenced by Trinitarian theology, and this has been a catalyst for work being done by scholars connected with the Society. His work on the inter-penetration of personhood is foundational for understanding agape love. This is critical when we come to what love means to all of us on a day-to-day basis. It literally means the bearing of another person in your soul, thereby creating an exchange of possibilities for the other person. In other words, this is what is meant by bearing another person’s burdens. Williams dealt with these deep spiritual issues of persons rightly related to Christ. Love is also the reality that flows within the three persons of the Trinity. Agape love is illustrated in the major metaphors of our relationships whether they are familial or marital. Williams illustrates in his works these very deep theological realities in everyday settings with average people going about their daily business. He shows that the holy life is not based on our performance but on the One who lives inside of us. And it makes a very personal difference because I’m not depending upon my resources, but upon the very Lord of life Himself.
