Kinlaw Symposium for Theological Dialogue has convened twice, to the delight of all who were involved. This new lecture series is part of the commitment of the Francis Asbury Society to participate in theological dialogue and scholarship for the purpose of bringing an emphasis on piety, rather than polity, to a task that has been increasingly relegated to abstracted ivory towers. To this end, we have initiated a series of lectures to be held three times per academic semester in the FAS Ministry Center.

Each Symposium features a lecture (followed by a light lunch) on a variety of topics relating to theology and ministry, and are held in an informal setting that encourages active discussion and interaction between attendees and lecturers. The aim is the mutual edification of all those involved.

At the end of September, at the innaugural Symposium, Dr. Ken Kinghorn was the featured lecturer (see photo). He gave a overview of the history of Asbury Theological Seminary, focusing on the seminal figure of Henry Clay Morrison. Last week, Symposium II featured renowned Wesleyan scholar Dr. Ken Collins, who gave an overview of the core of Wesley’s theology in a lecture entitled “John Welsey at 30,000 Feet.”

The next Symposium will take place on Thursday, December 1, at 10:30am at the FAS Ministry Center. The featured lecturer will be Dr. Steve Stratton, and his lecture is entitled, “The Trinitarian Faith as a Model for Forming Relationships.” The Symposium is open to all.

by David Harriman
July 21 – August 8, 2011

OPEN DOORS AND OPPORTUNITIES
It was my privilege, along with Tom Dunbar (retired World Gospel Mission missionary), to spend over two weeks in Guatemala City and other areas of the country. We traveled approximately 1300 kilometers (around 800 miles) overland to seven different cities and communities, speaking over 30 times to 1500 to 2000 peoplewhether it was to congregations, pastors, lay leaders, married couples, young people, not to mention the outreach on radio. We were treated royally with great hospitality and blessed with a daily diet of beans, tortillas, eggs, and coffee.

A LAND OF BEAUTY
Guatemala, meaning the land of the trees, is a beautiful mountainous tropical country located in the heart of Central America. Even though Spanish is the official language, there are 24 indigenous languages that are still spoken. And thanks to the past efforts of pioneer missionaries and the present ministries of numerous churches and denominations throughout the land, Guatemala now has a very high percentage of evangelical Christians. Yet, there is much more work to be done as as the country faces a formidable crime wave.

RENEWAL AND REVIVAL
God moved in hearts as many night after night came forward seeking forgiveness and purity, many with tears who poured their hearts out to the Lord. Church leadersand pastors also responded and eagerly absorbed the Word, and were challenged to live pure and spirit-filled lives in their communities and churches. Couples received marital counseling on how to have a stable and lasting marriage in the midst of today’s pressures and temptations. Numerous young people made spiritual commitments and vows toward sexual purity. God be praised!

THANK YOU
My deepest gratitude to the Francis Asbury Society, faithful donors, and to the generous offerings of the Guatemalan churches that made our trip to Guatemala, and travels in the country possible. Our heart-felt thanks to pastors Ana and Rivera who arranged the meetings in Guatemala City, and to pastor Elías who provided transportation and coordinated all of the events that were held in other regions of the country. And last but not least, a big thank you to my wife, Karol, who packs my suitcase and follows me with her prayers during the days I am away from home. I am grateful for her support.

On the weekend of May 13-14, over 300 friends of the Francis Asbury Society gathered for a special time of worship, preaching, and fellowship. The new Ministry Center was dedicated to the sacred purposes to which FAS is committed: to spread scriptural holiness to the ends of the earth in accordance with the Great Commission.

There were three sessions and a dedication ceremony, all held in a revival-style tent (with the exception of the dedication ceremony) directly behind the FAS Ministry Center.

At the Friday evening opening session, Dr. Kinlaw gave a powerful message on the legacy of Francis Asbury and our responsibility to hold him in remembrance. Afterwards, Dr. Kinlaw and the late Dr. Burgess, the Founders of FAS, were honored with a reception.

Saturday morning, despite some light rain, Dr. John Oswalt delivered the session two message entitled, “Why Another Ministry?” Dr. Ron Smith followed this with a sermon on the centrality of the Cross of Jesus. Attendees then enjoyed a cookout lunch of steak and grilled chicken. After lunch, Bill Gould led a Wesleyan hymn-sing.

As the rain continued, the dedication ceremony had to be moved inside the Ministry Center. This turned out to be a very fitting setting for the ceremony. President Paul Blair stood in front of the stained glass piece for the dedicatory address. The festivities concluded as they had opened, with Dan and Renita Koehn leading out in worship.

Full videos of each session, included the dedication ceremony, are available on the FAS Vimeo site. Pictures can be viewed here.

The Old Testament shows how God first revealed himself to humankind. Though a complex and often puzzling story, God’s choosing of Abram and his subsequent dealings with Abram’s family gives us essential insight into his dealings with us.

Dr. Kinlaw believes that the Old Testament depicts a just God who is nonetheless loving and merciful. Rather than an implacable judge, God more often appears in the Old Testament as a compassionate, self-sacrificing Father. This has profound implications for God’s relationship with us today.

These lectures were riginally presented at Asbury Theological Seminary in 1993, and now form a useful introduction to the theology of the Old Testament. They provide a unique framework for understanding God’s redemptive purpose in today’s world.

Paperback, 496 pages
$29.95
