Latin American Ministries
The Francis Asbury Society is providing funds for travel to Latin
America under the direction of Jim Harriman. The team of
Spanish-speaking evangelists have
spoken in Ecuador,
Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, Costa Rica,
Paraguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, and Colombia. They've spoken at evangelistic events, youth
rallies, leadership and marriage seminars. Their ministry has been
broadcast over radio and television in Costa Rica.
With this report, Karol and I are sending
you our sincere wishes for a Happy New Year for you and yours. May His
presence be yours as we take the first steps into 2008.
The last of November, I left for Peru accompanied by Daniel Duran, a
Mexican EMC pastor. We ministered in Chota and Jaen, northern cities
located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains and near the Ecuadorian
and Colombian borders. Culturally, most of the people are of Quechua
Indian descent.
Our flight out of Miami took us to Lima, the capital, and then to the
northern city of Cajamarca. From there we traveled overland over dirt
roads (some rugged and risky) to Chota and Jaen, where very few outside
evangelists go. All of our meetings were arranged and coordinated by two
laymen and a pastor with the Church of God. And what a fruitful trip it
was!
God
Broke Through in Chota (November 30 - December 5)
The city of Chota (population 34,778) is deeply entrenched in Roman
Catholicism with only five evangelical churches. But in spite of the
festivities and possessions that took place during our stay, 13
individuals found Christ during the evangelistic campaign. The first
four evangelistic services were held in the city hall and one in the
open air on a city street.
Ten church leaders also attended the leadership conference. One rural
pastor walked four hours to attend the meetings. A highlight was to see
each of them kneeling at an altar earnestly seeking holiness of heart
and a deeper walk with God. Pastor Narciso, who was instrumental in
organizing the events, was robbed of $5,000 in cash prior to our
arrival. He had set aside the money for the church work in Chota. But in
spite of that loss, plus having a wife who was ill, his love for the
Lord and his joyous attitude was wonderful to see.
REMARKABLE RESPONSE IN JAEN (December 6-9)
After completing the activities in Chota, Daniel and I traveled overland
to the city of Jaen (population 53,695). We were warmly received by
Alberto, a Christian agriculture engineer, who helped organize the
evangelistic events. During our stay we were able to minister to more
than 100 youth (nonbelievers) from one of the public schools. A
Christian teacher was instrumental in making this happen. We also spoke
to a number of employees at a local government agriculture department
and to a group of city policemen. We held two open air meetings, spoke
in two churches and had sessions with laymen and leaders. More than 50
sought Christ and many believers sought spiritual renewal. Another
joyous note was the spiritual restoration of a wayward son of one of the
pastors. The parents were deeply grateful for our visit in Jaen.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
The possibility of returning to Jaen in 2009 looks very favorable. We
would be holding an interdenominational conference for 200 church
leaders, and an evangelistic crusade where up to 1,000 people would come
to hear the gospel.
My deepest thanks to the Francis Asbury Society. I count it an honor and
a privilege as together we continue to make inroads into Latin America
with the full gospel.
In His Service,
David H. Harriman
