Dr. John N. Oswalt

Dr. John Oswalt is both a preacher and a teacher. He is available for revival meetings, Bible conferences, and retreats. While his expertise and primary interest is in the Old Testament and in showing the relevance of the Old Testament for contemporary Christians, he is also passionately concerned about Christian holiness and about the serious need for holy living among Christians today.

John received a B.A. degree from Taylor University, B.D. and Th.M. degrees from Asbury Theological Seminary, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Brandeis University with a concentration in Mediterranean Studies. His particular interest is Hebrew language and the formation of Hebrew religion against the background of the ancient Near East.

During his professional career, John has held faculty positions at Barrington College, Asbury Theological Seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and Wesley Biblical Seminary. In addition, he served a term as president of Asbury College (now University). Currently, Dr. Oswalt is a visiting distinguished professor of Old Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister in the Kentucky Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

John is the author of numerous scholarly articles and books, including a two-volume commentary on Isaiah in the New International Commentary on the Old Testament series. He also wrote the Isaiah volume in the New International Version Application Commentary, and the commentary on Exodus in the Cornerstone Commentary. He was the Old Testament editor of the Wesley Bible (Thomas Nelson) and served as consulting editor for the New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis (Zondervan, 1997). He was a member of the New International Version translation team and was senior translator (prophets) for the New Living Translation (1996, 2004). Three of his books—Called to Be Holy; Exodus, the Way Out, and On Being a Christian: Thoughts from John the Apostle—were published by The Francis Asbury Press and are available from the Francis Asbury Society. View all resources by Dr. Oswalt available from The Francis Asbury Society here.

In a time of spiritual and political turmoil, the Prophet Isaiah spoke Yahweh’s message to his people in Judah. Surrounded by pagan enemies and facing unfaithfulness in their own nation, what could the faithful of Judah expect from God? Would he remain true to them while also judging the unrighteousness of his “treasured nation”? Could these people really become God’s servants to share his message with the world? Many of the answers in Isaiah ring startlingly true in our culture today. Old Testament scholar John N. Oswalt illuminates God’s warning to his people and his plan for their ultimate redemption.
