Stan’s education includes an M.Div. degree from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Th.M. degree in Missions from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has completed additional graduate work at Asbury Theological Seminary in the E. Stanley Jones School of World Missions and at the Faculté Libre de Théologie Evangélique in Vaux-sur-Seine, France.

After serving churches in Virginia, Kentucky, and Illinois, Stan and his family served for ten years as church-planting missionaries in the suburbs of Paris, France. From 1994–2012, Stan was the senior pastor of Loudonville Community Church in Albany, NY. Stan joined the staff of the Francis Asbury Society in 2013 and was named president a year later. Stan also serves as the spiritual dean for the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) and is a member of the boards of One Mission Society and Sammy Tippit Ministries.

Raised in Georgia, the son of a Methodist preacher, Stan came into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ while he was a student at Asbury College. It was there he met Katy, to whom he has been married since 1977. They have three children and six grandchildren.

David: King of Hearts

This Bible study examines the life of David, the greatest king in history! In 2015, as our nation anticipates a presidential election, how helpful it is to study the life of the man elected by God himself to lead Israel! David’s reign set the standard for all who would follow. Equally gifted with harp and sling, he could praise God one moment and kill his enemies the next. One day sacrificially serving his people and the next committing adultery with his neighbor’s wife. Loved and adored one moment, he could be hated and vilified the next. King David led his nation to noble heights and to ignoble lows. What a mass of contradictions! How to account for such paradoxical realities in one person? What made him tick? Though we examine David’s outward deeds, we especially focus on his heart. David’s life helps us to understand that the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.

Reason Why

There are a lot of intellectual questions troubling many in our world today. This series seeks to answer a few of them—honestly. Finding honest answers to these questions doesn’t make faith inevitable but it does make faith possible.

At an intellectual level, we hope these lessons will help to resolve some of your deepest questions and doubts about the meaning of life. At a spiritual level, we pray these lessons will help you to love the Lord your God with all your mind (Matthew 22:37). At a practical ministry level, we want these lessons to equip you to be a better witness, ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you (I Peter 3:15).

Some of the questions asked include:

  • Does God exist?
  • Can we trust the Bible?
  • Where did it all begin?
  • Why pain?
  • What is man?
  • What’s wrong with the world?
  • What about other religions?

Jeremiah: Fire in the Belly

The time in which Jeremiah ministered was perhaps the most difficult period that the nation of Judah ever experienced.  Things were falling apart, and it appeared that God had abandoned his people to their enemies. But worse than the Babylonians on the outside was the corrupting influence of sin on the inside. Recognizing the frightful similarities between Jeremiah’s day and our own, this study enables Bible students to put their hope in God when all appears to be lost.

Faith Works: The Commands of Jesus

The Jesus many of us were introduced to as children in Sunday School is a sanitized, spiritualized, and domesticated version of what we actually encounter in the New Testament. When we read the original story of his life and ministry, we discover that Jesus was a revolutionary figure who upset the status quo wherever he went. No one could remain neutral or indifferent when Jesus of Nazareth came to town. He produced either a revival or a riot!

Perhaps you have claimed Jesus as your Savior for many years or perhaps you have never met him at all. In either case, these messages seek to help you encounter the real Jesus of the Gospels by focusing on some of the most important commands that he gave to those around him. When the wine ran out at the wedding of Cana, Mary said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). This series of sermons encourages you to do precisely that!

Revelation: The Last Word

Though most studies of Revelation tend to view it as a mystical crystal ball revealing secrets about the future, this course looks at the book as the greatest book of pastoral theology ever written. Pastor John, writing to the members of his churches, wants to encourage and equip them to be overcomers as they are called to live out their witness in the midst of the Evil Empire. Those who heed his pastoral wisdom will learn not only to survive, but to thrive in the evil day.

The Good Kings of Judah

This study examines the lives of those kings of Judah who “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.”  Tragically, each of these good kings had a character flaw that ultimately brought hardship and suffering on him and his nation. More than a study on leadership, this course examines the importance of godly character in the life of a leader. One moral flaw can undo a life of godly influence.  Over and over again, this study will help us to understand that the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.

The Geography of Salvation

Salvation is more than a judicial change of status; it is a journey. This study follows the map that the Hebrews followed as they left Egyptian bondage, passed through the Red Sea, camped at Sinai, turned back in fear at Kadesh Barnea, wandered in circles in the desert, crossed the Jordan River, and fought the battle of Jericho. The study reminds us that God brought us out so that He might bring us in. Canaan living is the birthright of every redeemed child of God.
