The Will of God

For all the energy we put into “finding God’s will”, Scripture sometimes offers less than satisfactory answers, at least in our worldly estimations. If we lack clarity, we doubt; if we lack zeal, we despair; if we lack vision, we lose hope. In all these seasons of life, though, the Father is ever present. I Thess. 4:3 says, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification.” Rom. 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Take these two verses together, and we see a beautiful picture forming of the Father’s heart for his children.

God knows what he wants for us better than we know what we want for ourselves. We confuse ourselves at times, but God is never confused. His will is the same yesterday, today, and forever: to make us like his Son, in all righteousness and holiness. If this is true, then there’s never a moment we live when the Father is not working all things together to this end.

And so we can rest in this truth, that for all our seeking, for all our groaning, in every season and trial, our faithful and loving Father is behind the scenes, like a master director, his eye on every angle and every shade of light, forming every element of us into something that will glorify his Son and bear witness to his great love.

All it takes is the faith to see it, and we will never again need to question his will.
